Mr Fizan Younis

Consultant Orthopaedic Hand & Wrist Surgeon
MBBCh, FRCS (Tr & Orth), Eur Dip Hand Surg, PG Dip MedEd

I am a European board certified Consultant Orthopaedic Hand and Wrist Surgeon. Having spent over 10 years in the NHS as a consultant at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, I now work exclusively within the private sector.

I specialise in treating hand and wrist conditions with a particular emphasis on treating commonly occurring conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, ganglia, base of thumb arthritis and Dupuytren’s contracture. I also have a specialist interest in treating martial arts and cricket-related hand injuries.

I graduated from the University of Wales College of Medicine in Cardiff in 2002. I completed my basic and higher surgical training in the Northwest of England. I then continued my training in specialist centres in Canada and France. I was awarded an AO Travelling Trauma fellowship to McGill University Hospital in Montreal. Here I received advanced training in the treatment of upper limb fractures and ligament injuries. I also trained at the Institute de la Main in Paris as part of the Training Programme Travelling Award awarded by the Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand (FESSH). Here I received specialist training in wrist arthroscopy techniques.

I am an enthusiastic educator and have a postgraduate diploma in medical education. I am grateful for having been recognised for my training with numerous awards including the Trainer of the Year for the Northwest region in 2021, the Educator Excellence award awarded by Health Education Northwest for consecutive years in 2018 and 2019 and the best educator for year 4 by the University of Central Lancashire in 2018. I am co chair of the AO Hand and Wrist course for the UK, and I am one of only 40 examiners in the whole of Europe for the European Diploma of Hand Surgery. I have a particular interest in research and have been involved in several national and international multi-centre trials including the CRAFFT trial, DISC trial, Suspect study, Corona Hands study, COVID Surg trial, POINT Trial and the Hands-2 trial. I have published a series of papers with the most recent addressing the gender pay gap in Orthopaedics and another that looks at the prevalence of hand and wrist complaints following infection with Corona Virus.

Quality Improvement

Innovation

Mr Younis was part of the Transformation Project that was responsible for the development of the purpose-built Elective Centre at Burnley General Hospital.

He also jointly led the fracture clinic re-design project that has resulted in remarkable reductions in waiting times for fracture clinic appointments.

He has worked closely with the hand therapy department to consolidate the use of patient-rated outcome measures as part of routine outpatient practice.  He introduced  WALANT (Wide Awake Local Anaesthesia No Tourniquet) surgery to the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. This means that many patients who would traditionally be put sleep for hand surgery can now have their operations ‘Wide-Awake’ under local anaesthetic.
